Lunar Eclipse 2010
You see, there is an upside of staying up late! I was so lucky to see the lunar eclipse tonight (or in the very wee hours of the morning)! I found out through NPR today that there was going to be one. How awesome to see it!
It has been raining for a few days now and the forecast is still calling for rain through Christmas and through the weekend. Well, we got a reprieve from the rain today, and I thank the moon and stars for a clear night for a few hours.
Reports said that the whole nation could view the eclipse if the sky was clear. I didn't think much about it, and although I had peeked outside through my bedroom window to see if I could get a good view of the eclipse, I didn't think I could actually see it. But I did! I was so excited, I literally jumped for joy when I went out to my backyard and looked up to the sky and saw the stars shining brightly... and there was this red orange ball. You would've thought I just saw Santa Claus on his sleigh riding with his reindeers over the moon!
I ran back inside to get my small digital Canon Elph camera; I definitely wanted to capture this moment. Well, the pics didn't come out as clear because I was shaking too much and even when I finally did steady my hands, I was still shaking. Back inside the house I went to get my tripod and on a second thought, I took my old Canon SLR with me. Unfortunately, there were no batteries in that darn camera.
It took me awhile to set up my Elph on the tripod and to get the best settings (hard to do when you are trying to adjust the settings in the dark) and even a little bit longer to catch the moon in sight.
It was about 12:30 midnight; I'm in my backyard cloaked in a blanket (it was about 45 degrees outside) I hear voices and laughter in the distance (maybe they were also looking up at the moon, celebrating with wine and cheese--well, that's my romantic notion anyway) and there I am trying to catch a lunar eclipse. I don't know, but I felt slightly euphoric being out there in the cold, trying to capture a bit of history, feeling like I was the only one out there awake (besides those other voices in the distance). Alas, after 10 or 15 shots, I managed to get just two fairly decent ones. I will definitely need to add a digital SLR camera in my future wish list.
It's almost like two moons colliding or a mirrored image of the moon, but my camera was shaking.

Bedtime now for this night owl! Perhaps I will dream about the red moon and the stars surrounding it.

Nice!! Unfortunately, I was inside a mall having coffee, and it was daytime here. I hear it coincided with the winter solstice too?
